Beryl the Peril was my hero when I was a kid, I loved the weirdness of the stories. It wasn’t until I looked back on the stuff I did at art college that I realised what an influence they had on my illustration. Beryl was created for The Topper by David Law, as a female version of his Dennis the Menace. I never really liked Dennis much but I did like Gnasher. Law retired in 1970 and Bob McGrath took over the strip later followed by John Dallas. Law’s version of Beryl is the best though. Apparently she was based on his daughter and the face she made when she was angry…
